The Disabled Facilities Grant

The Disabled Facilities Grant is a government-funded grant aimed at helping those with a disability or long-term illness make essential alterations to their homes. The goal is to help people continue to live independently in their homes and carry out day-to-day tasks without assistance.

The Disabled Facilities Grant can be used to fund:

  • Stairlifts
  • Ramps and access
  • Widening doors around the home
  • Adding accessibility features to bathrooms and kitchens

How Do I Qualify for a Stairlift Grant?

Stairlift grants are designed to support those who need help moving around their home, this could be due to age, an illness, or a disability.

You may be eligible for financial assistance through a stairlift grant if:

  • You or someone in your household has a long-term disability or mobility condition.
  • Your stairlift is essential for safe access around your home.
  • You own the property or have permission from your landlord to make the adjustments.
  • You intend to live in the property during the grant period (usually 5 years however this can be shorter, for example, if a person is terminally ill).
  • You meet your council’s means testing financial assessment.

Eligibility criteria can vary depending on your local council. The grant will also take your household income and general financial situation into account.

How Do I Apply for the Disabled Facilities Grant?

You will be required to apply for the Disabled Facilities Grant through your local council.

The council may send an occupational therapist or an assessor to visit your home. They will assess your home and the changes that are required.

What Does a Stairlift Grant Cover?

If approved, the grant will cover any equipment and adaptations that are required in your home. This includes installation costs and the purchase price of a home stairlift. This could be a straight stairlift, a curved stairlift, or an outdoor stairlift.

Your grant could also cover other adaptations to your home, including accessible shower installations or other mobility aids.

What is the Value of the Disabled Facilities Grant?

The grant value you will receive will usually depend on your:

  • Household income
  • Household savings over £6,000

The total value you can apply will also depend on where you are based in the UK. You can apply for:

  • Up to £30,000 in England
  • Up to £36,000 in Wales
  • Up to £25,000 in Northern Ireland

Can I Apply for a Stairlift Grant in Scotland?

Although the Disabled Facilities Grant doesn’t cover Scotland, you can apply for a stairlift grant under Scotland’s Scheme of Assistance.

As with the Disabled Facilities Grant, you can apply for the Scheme of Assistance through your local council. The grant can cover between 80% and 100% of the cost of a stairlift if you are a private homeowner or private tenant with a disability or long-term health condition.

Does the NHS Offer Stairlift Grants?

Although the NHS doesn’t offer stairlift grants directly, they can provide assistance in applying for a grant.

The NHS can help you access a stairlift grant by sending a healthcare professional to assess your home free of charge.

An NHS occupational therapy assessment can support applications to your local council for grants, including the Disabled Facilities Grant.

Am I Eligible for a VAT Reduction on a Home Stairlift?

UK residents may be entitled to further savings on a home stairlift through reduced VAT rates.

Those with a disability or a chronic illness may be able to purchase a home stairlift with 0% VAT. This includes:

  • Those with a physical or mental impairment with a long-term effect on the ability to fulfil everyday activities
  • A condition that is medically certified as a chronic sickness
  • A person who is terminally ill

If you are over 60 years old but don’t meet the criteria above, you may still be entitled to a reduced VAT rate of 5%.
